There's a lot of info out there on what Clean Beauty is. Let me help you get some clarity on what it's all about. PS - I'm Melanie, lovely to meet you! I'm the founder of da lish and you can read about me here

CLEAN BEAUTY means simply products that are safe for human use, do not include any toxic ingredients. Safe for people, animals & the planet.

ORGANIC - Non GMO (genetically modified organisms), plant based and no pesticides. As close to it's natural form as possible.

What is considered toxic ingredients? These are the most common:

PARABENS - are a group of preservatives and antimicrobial chemicals that prevent growth of nasty things like bacteria and mold in beauty products. Studies confirm they mimic estrogen in the human body which is lined to reproductive organs, thyroid disruption, hormone related cancers, They are easily absorbed and the effects on pregnant women are still being studied.

FRAGRANCE & PHTHALATES - Fragrance is where companies can disguise up to 3,000 + synthetic chemicals used to make a beauty product smell good. They're considered a trade secret and don't have to be disclosed. Phthalates help fragrance last longer and are linked to reproductive & hormonal harm.

ETHOXYLATED AGENTS - these include polyethylene glycois (PEGs), sulphates, SLS sodium lauryl sulfate and are commonly used in shampoos, body wash (products that lather/bubble). The problem with these chemicals is that they are very harsh, strips your hair & skin of it's natural oils and are considered a carcinogens (cancerous).

FORMALDEHYDE - The most notorious preservative in history! This is most commonly found in keratin hair products, creams, nail polish and even makeup. It's recognized globally as a carcinogen. (cancerous) We use it to preserve dead people. enough said.

PETROCHEMICALS (Refined Petroleum) - Mineral oil is used commonly in lip products & face creams. The major concerns are that it's the largest contaminant present in the human body. It accumulates mainly from cosmetics and it's environmentally hazardous.

TALC - Face powders, loose powders, eyeshadows and baby powder (see Johnson & Johnson lawsuit re ovarian cancer). It's a mineral that hasn't been purified and can be contaminated with asbestos which is a carcinogenic. (cancerous)

SILICA (Silicon) - Is an absorbent, gives slip and is used in everything from foundations, face primer, hair & oral care. They're not biodegradable, the particles known as quartz dust which is a carcinogen. (cancerous)

PRODUCT EXPIRATION - This should be on every product you purchase and can be difficult to understand. For mascara - every 6 months from the time you start using it due to the bacteria that can be transferred and cause eye infections. Lip, foundation, powders, palettes from the time they're opened are between 1 - 2 years depending on the product line and ingredients. The more natural/orgainc the lower shelf life it has but the less chemical you're absorbing.

REGULATION - No makeup, including natural makeup is strictly regulated by Health Canada or the FDA. Thy don't require companies to include specific ingredients. It's the manufacture's duty to make sure their products are safe.

FACT SHEET - It only takes 26 seconds for products that are applied on the skin to hit your blood stream.

The biggest pores in your body are in your scalp & underneath your armpits which hits your blood stream in less than a second.

You will eat approx 10 pounds of lip products in your lifetime. Every time you take a sip of water, talk, kiss, lick, bite, eat your lips. It's being ingested.

EASY TIP - Use your common sense! Think of your personal care like food. Are you familiar with the ingredients? Do they meet what your personal standards are for what you will allow into your body?
